FEAR This Game

Yesterday, I took my son into Manhattan to attend the F.E.A.R. 2 game launch event at the GameStop in Herald Square. The event was put on by Campfire and C.C. Chapman's The Advanced Guard.

Despite the single-digit temperatures, we had a great time. We went inside the store to be "screened" by an Armacham representative seen here (Armacham is the evil corporation of the F.E.A.R. games). After passing said test, I was led downstairs to a buxom nurse who cleared me medically to play the game. And this is where the fun began.

Outside, they had a mobile truck set up with a cockpit inside where I sat and played F.E.A.R. 2 for the first time. The game play was amazing, and the story line is spooky -- there's a psychic entity inside the game named Alma. What makes it worse is that Alma is a demonic-looking little girl who pops up from time to time. The best part of this game, by far, is the artificial intelligence of the super-soldiers you're tasked with killing in the game. These characters react in defensive ways like I've never seen before in other first-person shooters. They duck, dodge, hide, crouch, and take defensive positions behind structures. It's almost like you're playing against another person online. Really cool.

It was also great to see C.C. again and to meet J.C. Hutchins for the first time. J.C. went through the game training before I did, so we got to witness that first. There was a funny moment when my  son was describing how much better I did at the game than "the first guy" who went, not realizing he was describing to J.C. how poorly he played.

Yeah man! Can't wait for this game to come out. Hopefully it will be as good as the first.
